Nuclear Energy
MegaDrive
Nuclear power can cut nearly all emissions from large ships while giving them years of range without refueling. MEGA-DRIVE builds on this vision by developing a compact, hermetically sealed turbogenerator designed for maritime use.
At the heart of the concept is a closed Brayton cycle using supercritical CO₂ (sCO₂). The same CO₂ that drives the turbine also cools the generator and is used in the bearings, eliminating oil systems, reducing leaks, and simplifying the entire power unit. This integrated approach makes the machinery far more compact, and it is well-suited to the tight spaces and tough conditions at sea.
This project, funded by RVO/NOW, brings together AE Group and TU Delft to deliver a high-speed generator and a test setup that proves the concept.
